The area around Passau, flourishing in nature and abound with spectacular views, is one of the most popular hiking regions in all of Germany. The 6.8-kilometre "Donausteig" route starts at St. Stephens Cathedral in Passau, and is the perfect walk for occasional hikers. After a short walk through the City of Three Rivers, past the Bishop's Palace, the Town Hall and the Römerplatz, the path leads across the Danube and up to the most spectacular panorama over Passau. It continues past the former fortress "Veste Oberhaus", along the south bank of the Ilz and on to the ruined castle "Burgruine Hals", and finally back to the town along the north bank of the Ilz.
The walk starts at St. Stephen's Cathedral, approximately a 15-minute walk from Passau station.
