From sandy steppe to tropical rainforest to alpine mountains - the Botanic Garden takes visitors on a very special journey around the world.

History and diversity of the Botanical Garden in Augsburg

Founded as a municipal nursery with a small educational and show garden in 1936, visitors to the Augsburg Botanical Garden today can expect a journey through the various geological and climatic zones of our planet. Around 3,100 different plant species from all over the world now grow here: from plants from the sandy desert region and hot savannah to specimens from the tropical jungle and the botany of the barren mountain world or our native meadows.

A journey of discovery through the themed gardens

The extensive outdoor area of the Augsburg Botanical Garden comprises several themed gardens. Whether it's the ancient Roman garden, the local fruit and farmer's garden, the fragrant rose garden or the apothecary garden with medicinal and aromatic plants - guests can get an impression of how diverse and varied the world of plants can be in the 20 or so themed areas.

Japanese garden: a place of tranquillity and aesthetics

The Japanese garden is definitely worth a visit. The well-known landscape architect Yoshikuni Araki has meticulously planned the grounds down to the last detail. The perfect interplay of the elements of stone, water and plants creates an authentic Japanese oasis of calm in the centre of Augsburg. It is not for nothing that the garden is considered one of the most representative Japanese gardens in Europe.

The glass show house: a home for exotic plants

Plants from (sub-)tropical or hot and dry climates feel particularly at home in the botanical garden's glass show house. This is because the "plant world under glass" is characterised by pleasant - sometimes hot and humid - temperatures all year round, allowing tropical useful and ornamental plants to grow and thrive. But visitors can also view carnivorous plants, cacti, succulents and other exotic plants in their almost natural environment.

A year-round experience: offers and events in the botanical garden

Under the motto "An experience through four seasons", the Augsburg Botanical Garden presents itself in an extremely diverse way all year round. In addition to the glass show house and the extensive outdoor area with its various themed areas, it offers an extremely varied supporting programme: from changing themed tours, special lectures and practical seminars on the topics of gardens, ecology, nature and the environment to cultural events such as literary walks or concerts of various genres. A special highlight is the annual butterfly exhibition, which usually takes place from January to April. During this period, the glass show house becomes home to exotic butterflies from Asia, East Africa, Central and South America.

Culinary delights in the chestnut garden

Culinary delights are also available in the Botanic Garden: in the beer garden and restaurant Kastaniengarten, located in the centre of the Botanic Garden's outdoor area. When the weather is fine, visitors can enjoy delicious coffee and cake creations or savoury snacks at moderate prices in the shade of the tall chestnut trees. In cool weather, the cosy interior of the restaurant invites guests to linger.

By the way: Augsburg Zoo with more than 1,200 animals from all over the world is located directly opposite the Botanical Garden. Why not stop by while you're in the neighbourhood?
