Just a few minutes from Reutte train station, off you go on a wet adventure you won't soon forget.

"Feet together and arms crossed in front of your chest!" - the mountain guide's instructions are simple. After a moment's hesitation, you jump off and take your first hop into the crystal-clear water of the wild Archbach. The neoprene suit protects you from the worst of the cold, but you are suddenly wide awake when you dive in. Canyoning is the name of the sport in which you hike down a gorge, jump into natural pools, hurtle down rock slides and are abseiled down the Stuibenfall. If you dare, you can jump metres into deep water. If that is too wild for you, you can also avoid these jumps on an easy path. Prices for the four-hour tour, including guide and rental equipment, can be found here. You should bring sports shoes that can get wet. The tour starts directly at the station and a shuttle takes you to the starting point.

Canyoning is often about being able to overcome yourself. Rafting, on the other hand, is all about teamwork. On the instructions of the guide, you manoeuvre the robust inflatable boat through the roaring rapids of the Lech. In between, you glide gently over the calmer passages of the river and can enjoy the view of the rugged rocky peaks of the Lechtal Alps. At lunchtime there is a fortifying outdoor buffet on a gravel bank, which gives you strength for the second section. For the 7-hour tour, bring swimming gear, a towel and a second pair of sturdy shoes (more information and prices here).

Back in Reutte, you only realise how hungry the excursion in the wild water has made you. At the Zum Mohren restaurant, just 5 minutes from the station, you can get hearty specialities such as Tyrolean gröstl and fried chicken with potato and cucumber salad.

How to get there: Take the train to the station in Reutte, where you will be picked up by the guide. To get to the Mohren, walk straight ahead from the station along Bahnhofstraße, then turn left onto Untermarkt. The restaurant is on the left after 200 metres.

Our extra tip for children

For the youngest who are brave enough to fight their way through the gorge, there is a special family canyoning tour at the Stuiben Falls. The tour is designed for children from the age of seven and is just right for young explorers.
