Lovers of cross-country skiing can enjoy themselves in the shadow of Germany's highest mountain: the Zugspitze. With 130 kilometres of perfectly prepared trails, this snowy winter wonderland is just waiting to be discovered.

Winter sports activities around Lermoos at a glance:

  • Skating and cross-country skiing
  • Sledding
  • Skiing and snowboarding in Grubigstein; Leermoos offers boarders and freestylers two very special highlights: a special snowboard run and a funpark.
  • Winter hiking, particularly snowshoe hikes
  • Igloo building
  • Pistenbully driving
  • Sleighrides
  • Laser biathlon
  • Ski tours
  • Ice skating, curling and ice hockey

Enjoying winter sports has never been so easy. Upon reaching the station at Lermoos/Tirol, fans of cross-country skiing can simply strap on their skis (either their own or rented) and the fun can begin. 130 kilometres of trails are just waiting to be discovered. In Berwang, visitors can put their stamina and steady hand to the test in laser biathlon.

Even the journey to Ehrwald is an experience. After passing through Garmisch, the mountains come right up to the track as the journey continues through the narrow Loisach valley at the foot of the Zugspitze. Upon reaching Ehrwald, the scenery changes into a round and flat valley floor, with cross-country skiers visible from the train as they enjoy the trails in the gleaming sunshine. The ski trail runs straight past the train station at Lermoos. Following it to the east, you soon reach the popular Golf and Tummebichl trails. The 130 kilometres of cross-country ski trails are free to use and are always set up for both skating and classic techniques. The surrounding stations in Ehrwald, Lähn, Bichlbach and Heiterwang are also close to various ski trails that connect to the Arena trail: a demanding stretch of around 40 kilometres through the entire Tirol Zugspitz Arena. The Golf trail has snow machines that virtually guarantee suitable conditions. The daily trail report provides information on which trails are currently ready, while an interactive trail overview is available here.

Those looking for a meal between activities need look no further than Golfino, located by the Golf trail between Ehrwald and Lermoos, 27 minutes from the station in Lermoos. Offering fantastic views of the Zugspitze and valley basin, the restaurant serves up regional and international cuisine to help visitors power through the last few kilometres on the trail. Please note that Golfino is closed until 20 December 2019. A special laser biathlon event is held once a week on the Moos trail in Berwang. Instead of bullets, participants shoot with lasers, making the sport safe and suitable for novices too. With your pulse racing as you take aim, that little black circle just won't stand still. Only then do you appreciate what it takes for professionals to compete in the biathlon world cup while you watch on TV from the comfort of your sofa. The laser rifle has a sensitive trigger. But by taking the tips from the coaches on board, everyone can chalk up their first hits – just breathe out halfway, hold your breath and fire. Then it's time to pick up your poles and get back into the race.

Lermoos also has plenty on offer for fans of skiing and snowboarding. The valley station of the Grubigstein cable car is just 600 metres to the south of Lermoos station. From here, visitors can travel directly to the Grubigstein skiing area, which offers a variety of pistes for both novices and experienced skiers across 27 kilometres. The funpark is particularly appealing to boarders and freestylers,  featuring several jumps, a permanent racetrack with timer and a natural snowboarding area with its own downhill run. Information about which pistes and lifts are open can be found here.

Those who prefer sledding to skiing should not miss the longest natural sled run in the Tirol Zugspitz Arena, located on the Grubigstein in Lermoos. The run begins at the middle station of the Grubigstein cable car. If you don't have your own sled, you can rent one on site.

As well as typical winter sports, Lermoos offers some more unusual activities such as an igloo building workshop or a day driving a Pistenbully snowplough

In summer, visitors to Lermoos can enjoy the area's natural beauty in the shadow of the Zugspitze on foot, mountain bike or even by paraglider

Getting there:
For cross-country skiing, take the train to Lermoos. The skiing trail starts right next to the station. For biathlon, get off at Buchlbach-Berwang and take the number 6 ski bus to the laser biathlon on the Moos trail. An overview of winter and ski buses is available here.
