Hofbräukeller on Wiener Platz

Originally built as a cellar for storing beer between 1892 and 1894, the Hofbräukeller on Wiener Platz is now one of Munich's largest beer gardens. And it is certainly one of the most beautiful places to enjoy a snack in Munich.

Under shady chestnut trees, around 1,400 guests can sit on rustic wooden benches in the spacious self-service area. In keeping with Bavarian tradition, guests are also welcome to bring food from home and eat it here. But it is also worth trying out the Hofbräukeller cuisine: Steckerlfisch, sausage salad, chicken or fresh lard pastries - there's plenty on offer. Refreshing spritzers, lemonades and soft drinks are available, as well as the world-famous Hofbräu beer. After all, Wiener Platz was home to the brewery of the same name until 1988 - the former stables of the brewery horses are still there today and serve as wooden arcades and seating for the beer garden guests. From the beer bench to the deckchair: the sand bar of the Munich Hofbräukeller

In the middle of the beer garden there is also a beach bar: the Sandbar. Between palm trees, sand hills and parasols, it is the perfect place to relax in fine weather in comfortable deckchairs and cosy lounge corners with fancy cocktails and homemade lemonades.

Urban flair, cosy atmosphere and idyllic nature: Wiener Platz

What is also special about the Hofbräukeller is its location: it is situated directly on the picturesque Wiener Platz, in the middle of Munich's Haidhausen district. This is also where Munich's smallest permanent market is located. And so here - surrounded by historic old buildings with a cosy village charm - you can stroll through the traditional market stalls of the Wienermarkt until early in the evening on weekdays. It is also only a few minutes' walk to the Isar. The route takes you right through the extensive Maximiliansanlagen, which directly adjoin the Hofbräukeller and were commissioned by King Max II. You should also take a detour to another impressive Bavarian building nearby: the Maximilianeum, the seat of the Bavarian parliament. The building is enthroned on a hill from which you have a beautiful view of Munich's old town - from the Maxmonument to the elegant Maximilianstraße and the famous Munich Frauenkirche.

Arrival: Take the train to Munich's Ostbahnhof station. From there it is a 17-minute walk to the Hofbräukeller on Wiener Platz. Leave the Ostbahnhof at the Orleansplatz/Wörthstraße exit. Follow Wörthstraße straight ahead past Bordeauxplatz until you reach Preysingstraße. Turn left here and immediately turn right again into Steinstraße. Continue straight along Steinstraße. It will take you directly to your destination, Wiener Platz. The Hofbräukeller is on the left-hand side.
