Pfronten lies in the picture-perfect Ostallgäu region, on the border with the Tirol region of Austria. This snowy mountain landscape is easy to reach by train. The valley station of the Breitenberg chairlift is located at the main station in Pfronten-Steinach. The four-seater chairlifts carry visitors effortlessly to the highest peak at 1,677 metres. From here, sledders can take in a spectacular view across the Pfronten valley. Those who can't wait to race back down can do so as soon as they leave the chairlift. At six kilometres, the Breitenberg offers the longest natural sled run in the Allgäu region. Sleds are available to rent from the bottom station of the Breitenberg chairlift. Once they reach the bottom, visitors can head back to the valley station with their sled on a free shuttle bus before climbing back up the mountain for the next run. Skiers and snowboarders enjoy a total of 8 km of pistes in the largest and snowiest skiing area in the Ostallgäu region. With both easy and difficult pistes, there is plenty on offer for both novices and experienced skiers.

If you have time for other activities, take a hike from the mountain station of the chairlift to the Ostler Hütte cabin. After a climb of around half an hour, you can enjoy lunch and the free breathtaking view (make sure to try the traditional allgäuer kässpätzle). The cabin's webcam offers a taste of the incredible panorama. Please not that the Ostler Hütte is closed until 20 December 2019.

Information on chairlift opening times and weather forecasts is available here.

A trip to Pfronten is also worthwhile in summer. Visitors can enjoy a range of activities including climbing, hiking, geo-walks through the mountains and even paragliding.

Getting there: Take the train to Pfronten-Steinach. The valley station is a short walk away: head left to the other side of Tiroler Strasse.
