Skiing across two countries in the middle of the AllgÀu Alps

As soon as the first snow falls on the mountains, the AllgÀu turns into a skier's paradise. Around Oberstdorf and the neighbouring Kleinwalser valley, there are several snow pistes just waiting for skiers, snowboarders, sledders and hikers.

Winter sports activities in Oberstdorf at a glance:

  • Skiing and snowboarding for both novices and pros
  • Sledding
  • Hiking

After getting on the Nebelhorn cable car, visitors glide over a sports complex that will be familiar to many from TV – the ski jumping hill in Oberstdorf. It is here that the best ski jumpers in the world go up against each other. But as the journey continues over three stages, the cable car brings visitors to the Nebelhorn at an altitude of 2,224 metres. Even if you haven't bought your skis, you can still take the cable car up the mountain and enjoy the incredible views over the AllgĂ€u Alps. The skiing area may be relatively small, but it has a variety of pistes, is bathed in sunshine and offers something for all ability levels. The downhill run of around 1,400 metres is a challenge for even the most experienced skiers. There is also a fast natural sled run that begins at the Seealpe station and goes downhill towards Oberstdorf.

Those searching for even more pistes will find what they are looking for in Fellhorn. The valley station of the Fellhorn cable car is located around 15 minutes by bus (ski bus No. 7) from Oberstdorf station. Upon reaching the top of the mountain ridge, visitors can look out across the Austrian border. The pistes on the other side of the ridge run downhill into the Kleinwalser valley. The excellent ski bus connections throughout the entire valley make the ride down well worthwhile. Visitors can use the buses to reach the beautiful skiing areas on the Heuberg, Ifen and Walmendinger Horn mountains. The Walmendinger Horn also attracts freeriders with some of the best deep snow runs in the region. The best place to enjoy a lunchtime break is the Cantina Vertical, located next to the valley station in Riezlern. This cosy and stylish cafe offers delicious sandwiches and what many say is the best coffee in the valley. Please note that the cafe is only open again from 5 December 2019.

In the spring and summer months, the Nebelhorn cable car carries walkers, hikers and mountain climbers to the summit. There is plenty on offer for mountain lovers young and old, from child-friendly paths and a range of hikes to the challenging Hindelanger via ferrata. One of the main highlights is the path around the summit. Suitable for prams and wheelchairs, visitors can peer 600 meters down – maybe not the best activity for those with a fear of heights.

Getting there: Take the train to Oberstdorf. From there, take the bus No. 9 to the Nebelhorn cable car (journey time: seven minutes). The journey by foot takes around 15 minutes. Starting at Bahnhofsplatz, walk straight ahead onto Hauptstrasse. Turn left onto Nebelhornstrasse, which leads to the valley station. To get to the Fellhorn cable car, take the bus No. 7 from Oberstdorf station. There are free shuttle buses that run every 10 minutes from the train station to the skiing areas in Fellhorn (around 15 minutes with bus No. 7) or Söllereck (around 10 minutes with bus No. 1).
