University town of Würzburg – daytrip ideas for one of the ten most liveable cities in Germany

Founded in 704 and long ruled by its prince-bishop, the Franconian city of Würzburg is famous today for its impressive array of cultural attractions. It also has a host of leisure activities and wellness facilities to offer.

Würzburg is always well worth a visit thanks to its wealth of historical treasures, such as the Residence palace - a UNESCO heritage site and one of the most important palaces in Europe - the Old Main Bridge with its impressive 4.5 m statues, and the town hall, which is a picturesque mix of different architectural styles. Unsurprisingly, German economics magazine WirtschaftsWoche selected it as one of the ten most liveable cities in Germany.

It's possible to see all of its most beautiful sights on a speedy one-day trip. Along with cultural highlights, Würzburg also offers action-packed excitement in the form of go-carting at the E-Kart Center. Covering two floors and with 330 m of track, it's a race driver's dream come true - and much faster and quieter than conventional go-carts to boot. If you've ever wanted to go laser tagging, the town has something for you too: a dedicated gaming facility where you can take part in a high-tech version of cops and robbers as you pit your wits against your opponents. You can head to Float Würzburg if you'd prefer something less face-paced and a lot more relaxing. It's the ultimate way to unwind completely - saltwater tanks let you feel like you've escaped the effects of gravity, while your mind can simply go where it wants. To finish the day, head to Benito, the ice-cream parlour famous for its classic flavours such as vanilla as well as for innovative creations such as vegan sorbets.
