Railway Lines
all-season
family friendly

The Außerfernbahn is one of the most beautiful railway lines in Bavaria. From Garmisch-Partenkirchen via Reutte in Tyrol to Pfronten-Steinach, you can experience impressive Alpine panoramas, charming villages and numerous excursion destinations - all in a relaxed way by train.

A train journey through the Alps

The Außerfernbahn railway connects the Bavarian Allgäu with Tyrol and takes you through one of the most impressive landscapes in the Alpine region. Your journey starts in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, takes you through the idyllic Tyrolean Außerfern and finally ends in Pfronten-Steinach. Breathtaking mountain scenery, crystal-clear lakes and numerous opportunities for hikes and exploratory tours await you along the way. The most important stops along the route include Garmisch-Partenkirchen, which offers you connections to Munich, Innsbruck and Mittenwald, as well as Griesen, a perfect starting point for hikes in the Ammergebirge mountains. In Reutte in Tyrol, a historic market town with impressive castles awaits you, while in Pfronten-Steinach, the imposing backdrop of the Allgäu Alps invites you to outdoor adventures.

Sights along the Außerfernbahn railway line

Not only the journey itself is a highlight, but also the numerous sights along the route. The world-famous Neuschwanstein Castle is just a few kilometres from the railway line and can be easily reached from Füssen or Pfronten. The Ehrenberg Castle World near Reutte is one of the most impressive castle complexes in the Alps. Particularly spectacular is the highline179, one of the longest pedestrian suspension bridges in the world, from which you can enjoy a breathtaking panorama. If you prefer to explore nature, the Grüntensee lake near Oy-Mittelberg is a wonderful destination for a day trip. Here you can take a relaxing stroll along the water and stop off at one of the cafés overlooking the lake.

Another highlight is the Zugspitze, Germany's highest peak, which you can reach from Garmisch-Partenkirchen by cog railway or cable car. A spectacular view of the surrounding Alps awaits you at the top. The region around the Außerfernbahn also offers countless opportunities for hiking and cycling enthusiasts. From Reutte, you can set off on a multi-day hike along one of Europe's last wild rivers on the Lechweg trail. A challenging mountain tour takes you from Griesen to the Schellschlicht, an impressive panoramic peak. If you prefer a more leisurely pace, the steam locomotive circuit, a relaxed cycle tour along former railway lines, is ideal.

Hop on and discover the Alps on rails!
