Pegnitz: circular hiking trail with idyllic views in Upper Franconia

Romantic circular trail with far-reaching views

Insider tip for hiking enthusiasts: Go on a discovery tour in tranquil Pegnitz and be enchanted by the romantic natural idyll. The Oak Leaf Trail is a classic circular hiking route. You start directly at Pegnitz railway station. From there, the green oak leaf markings lead you along the eight-kilometre tour. One of the scenic highlights right at the start is the viewing tower on the landmark of Pegnitz - the Schloßberg. After climbing almost 100 steps, you have more than earned the marvellous view of the small town and the Franconian Alb. Even more beautiful views await you on the platform of the Diana rock. But first you have to make your way through the labyrinth of rocks to the stone steps. Your Upper Franconian nature experience ends at the Wiesweiherhalle.

Franconian specialities and "Flinderer-Alarm" in the heart of Pegnitz

Before heading home, fortify yourself at Gasthaus Ponfick, the only pub in the centre of Pegnitz where you can still enjoy Franconian home cooking. In a rustic ambience, the landlady Waltraud Meyer offers daily changing, hearty dishes: Roulade, schnitzel or sausages from our own slaughterhouse. Beer fans should definitely pay a visit to Pegnitz during the fifth season from April to July. This is when the local pubs are busy "geflindert". The pubs then take it in turns to serve the slightly stronger Flinderer beer. It is said to cause a slight tingle on the tongue. It's best to see for yourself when you visit Pegnitz.

From the Wiesweiherhalle it is just under 500 metres until you can taste the Franconian specialities. Follow Wiesweiherweg westwards and turn left at Schloßstraße. You will then see the inn at the junction with the main road. From there, take the turn-off to Bahnhofstraße and follow the left-hand bend straight ahead until you reach Pegnitz railway station.
