Huglfing: the village in the blossoming Pfaffenwinkel region
Huglfing lies between gentle moraine hills and wide meadows in the Pfaffenwinkel region. It is a village that has captured the hearts of Europe. Thanks to its sustainable initiatives, lovingly tended gardens, and lively village community, it has been awarded the gold medal by Entente Florale Europe.
A village with a golden touch
With around 2,800 residents, Huglfing lies in Upper Bavaria’s Pfaffenwinkel region, between Weilheim and Murnau. It’s nestled in a gently rolling landscape of meadows, forests, and small streams. In the European competition Entente Florale Europe 2025, Huglfing received the Gold Medal for outstanding village design, sustainability, and community spirit. The jury praised the residents’ sense of togetherness, their commitment to environmental and climate protection, and the harmonious design of public spaces. As you stroll through the streets, you can feel this spirit everywhere – from flower-filled village squares and community-tended green spaces to lovingly designed front gardens that give Huglfing its distinctive charm.
What to discover in Huglfing
Huglfing may be small, but it has a rich and fascinating history. At its heart stands the parish church of St. Magnus, whose tower dates back to the Romanesque period – more than 800 years old and built from solid tuff stone. The nave itself was constructed in the late Middle Ages and has been altered several times over the centuries. Inside, different eras meet: Art Nouveau stucco from 1911, remnants of early Rococo decoration in the Sebastian Chapel, and impressive stained-glass windows that bathe the interior in warm light.
Art lovers should visit the former railway signal box near the station. Once used for train dispatching, it now houses a small gallery called Ausstellwerk, where regional artists exhibit their work. Between old railway signs and paintings, the place exudes a charming blend of history, creativity, and village life.
Even a casual walk through the village reveals plenty to admire: well-kept farmhouses with flower-decked balconies, intricately carved wayside crosses, and small chapels that tell stories of faith and tradition in the Pfaffenwinkel region.
