Bamberg smoked beer ("Rauchbier") is made using smoked malt, which gives it its characteristic aroma and reminds you a bit of smoked ham. However, its flavour divides opinion. Some turn away after the first sip, whereas for others it puts all other beers in the shadows. Why not test which camp you belong to? It's a taste experience that shouldn't be missed. Two breweries rich in this tradition are the "Schlenkerla" (a 20-minute walk from the station through Bamberg old town) and "Brauerei Spezial" (a 9-minute walk).
