Water sports at Lake Brombach: Surfing, kiting and paddling

The Franconian Lake District is the perfect excursion destination in Middle Franconia for water sports enthusiasts and those who want to become one. When the wind blows, it’s mainly kiters and windsurfers who head to Lake Brombach. If you travel by train to Langlau, you can rent all the equipment for windsurfing at the surf school. Courses are also offered there to learn windsurfing or kitesurfing – perfect for anyone wanting to get on the board for the first time.

Things are a bit calmer with the trend sport of stand-up paddling (SUP): board, paddle and wetsuit can be rented together, and you can find all prices here. If you want to learn the basics of SUP, you can of course also book a course.

For just a small amount of money you can also get a kayak for half a day. In a double kayak you can even explore the lake as a team. You don’t necessarily need to bring provisions for the tour, as numerous beer gardens await along the shore, ready to serve paddlers appropriately. A very good choice is the beer garden Zum Hafen on the Absberg bathing peninsula, easily accessible even for inexperienced paddlers from the starting point. Our tip: try the trout, freshly smoked on site.

Culinary experience in Langlau

After sports, head to the Landgasthof Krokodil in Langlau for refreshment. In the beautiful beer garden you’ll find hearty German and Croatian specialties such as cream schnitzel or Croatian grilled platters. The inn is located very close to the train station and the tourist information office at Seestraße 14. You can also treat yourself to a midday brunch on Lake Brombach – lake view included!

VGN leisure tip: Gorges and lakes – family adventure around Lake Brombach

It’s not only the water that excites, but also a real adventure program awaits on land. The family-friendly tour "Gorges and Lakes" covers around nine kilometers from Spalt via Enderndorf am See to Pleinfeld, with numerous highlights for explorers big and small.

We start in Spalt with a walk through the historic old town. Right at the beginning you’ll find the Schlenzgerhaus, a curious "half house" built directly onto the city wall. If you want to feel nature barefoot, set off on the BarfußWonnenWeg, where bark, gravel, natural stone slabs and sand create plenty of “aha” moments.

Across fields and along the edge of the forest, the path continues to the Schnittlinger Loch, an impressive sandstone gorge with rock walls up to 15 meters high. A footbridge and 116 steps lead through the natural monument – adventure feeling guaranteed.

Just before the finish line, the large bathing beach at Enderndorf offers plenty of variety: playgrounds, a water playground, a boat dock and places to stop for refreshments such as Café zum Hafen, Gasthof Brombachsee or Gasthaus Zum Hochreiter.

From there you can take the MS Brombachsee or leisure bus lines 609 and 699 back to Pleinfeld.

Across the lake with the trimaran: MS Brombachsee

A highlight on the water is the trip with the MS Brombachsee, a modern trimaran with space for up to 750 passengers. The journey lasts about 40 minutes and combines riding fun with fresh lake air and wide views. For little captains, there’s a special kids’ ship with a slide and flagpole on the upper deck.

A special tip for connoisseurs: every Sunday the MS Brombachsee invites you to a three-hour brunch cruise. At the breakfast and lunch buffet you not only satisfy your hunger but also enjoy a wonderful view of the lake’s gentle waves.

If you board at Waldstrand Pleinfeld, you can also rent SUPs or rickshaws right there – ideal for anyone wanting to experience the water from different perspectives.

Relaxed arrival by train

Getting to Lake Brombach is completely relaxed by train, depending on what you want to experience:

Water sports fans should get off at Langlau. The station is just a few minutes’ walk from the surf school, where you can rent windsurfing or SUP equipment and get straight onto the water. The kayak rental is also easily accessible from here.

If you want to ride the MS Brombachsee, Pleinfeld station is the best starting point. From there, you can reach Waldstrand Pleinfeld in about 15 minutes on foot, including beach house, SUP rental and access to the trimaran.

For the family-friendly adventure hike of the VGN leisure tip "Gorges and Lakes," the best way is via Georgensgmünd or Roth. From there you transfer to leisure bus lines 609 or 623 and conveniently reach Spalt, the starting point of the tour.

Another secret: sunken mills

Did you know that the remains of twelve former water mills still lie at the bottom of Lake Brombach today? They were once used to grind grain and generate electricity until they had to give way to the flooding of the lakes in the 1970s. Today, a small power plant on the lake still harnesses the water’s energy. An exciting fun fact for anyone interested in history.
