By train directly to the ski lift. The Tyrolean ski arena Berwang is located directly on the Außerfernbahn and offers 36 kilometres of easy slopes as well as numerous other options for active winter sports fans. The Austrian ski area is easily accessible via the Außerfernbahn with its breathtaking views with the Bayern-Ticket.

Winter sports facilities in the Berwang ski area at a glance:
  • Skiing and snowboarding, for newcomers, family and pleasure skiers.
  • Tobogganing & night tobogganing
  • Hiking
  • Cross-country skiing
  • Ice skating
  • Curling

It doesn't always have to be the biggest ski area to enjoy a perfect day's skiing. The Berwang ski arena, 15 kilometres west of the Zugspitze, has 36 kilometres of pistes and 13 lifts and, in addition to the classic downhill runs, offers a varied programme of winter sports. Toboggan fans and cross-country skiers get their money's worth here, as do hikers and curling fans. The Berwang ski area is located directly on the Außerfernbahn, a cross-border railway line between Bavaria and Tyrol, which already makes the journey an experience with great views of the Wetterstein massif and the Zugspitze massif. For safety's sake, you should carry an identity card with you when crossing the border.

Family-friendly winter fun

With 20 kilometres of easy slopes (marked blue), the Berwang ski area is particularly suitable for families with children, novice skiers and pleasure skiers. If you have never been on skis before or would like to brush up your skills, you can book an introductory or advanced course at the local ski schools. Equipment can be rented at the local sports shops.

Whizzing down the valley on the natural toboggan run

In addition to skis and snowboards, the two specialist shops Nagele and Sport-Alm, which are located in the immediate vicinity of the railway station, also offer toboggan rental. Then it's off to the free toboggan run, which is open daily from 8:30 a.m. to 4:20 p.m. from the start of the season on 17 December until the beginning of April, depending on snow conditions. For children, wearing a helmet on the toboggan run is not only important but also compulsory. Helmets can also be rented in the sports shops. You can get to the starting point of the toboggan run either in about a 30-minute walk along the cleared winter hiking trail from Berwang to the Jägerhaus or by taking a ride on the 6-seater chairlift Egghof Sun Jet.

Along the cross-country trail

For cross-country skiers, the Berwang ski arena also has several kilometres of prepared cross-country trails, both for classic cross-country skiing and for skating. The 39-kilometre network of trails around Bichlbach-Berwang can be accessed right next to the "Bichlbach Almkopfbahn" and "Bichlbach-Berwang" railway stations. The Nagele sports shop, where you can rent cross-country skiing equipment, can be found in the centre of Bichlbach just 300 metres from the station. On your tour along the panoramic trail from Bichlbach towards Heiterwang am See, you can recharge your batteries with Kässpatzn and Kaiserschmarrn at the Sunnawirt inn to continue exploring the branching network of trails. Most of the cross-country trails are interconnected and allow you to ski almost the entire network of trails in the western Zugspitze region of 110 kilometres. All cross-country ski trails in the Berwang ski area are available to cross-country skiing fans free of charge.

Walking in a Winter Wonderland

The snow-covered winter landscape of Bichlbach-Berwang also provides the ideal backdrop for a wintry walk on one of the numerous hiking trails. The destination of your hike could be one of the numerous rustic alpine huts, which tempt you with Tyrolean delicacies in their warm rooms. To ensure that everyone makes good progress, all recommended winter hiking trails are cleared and gritted and are therefore also suitable for families with children. Many of the paths can also be used with an all-terrain pushchair. Put on sturdy shoes and let's go!

Feast and enjoy the view

Winter sports make you hungry. If you want to take a little time out from your active winter excursion and enjoy the view at the same time, you will find a cosy spot at 1,620 metres in the Heiterwanger Hochalm. It is located between the two mountain stations of the Almkopfbahn and the Sonnalmbahn and can therefore be reached by lift from Bichlbach as well as from Berwang. In the rustic alpine hut, Tyrolean classics such as germ and bacon dumplings, Kaiserschmarrn and Brettljausen are on the menu. The Hochalm is open in both the winter and summer seasons.

Berwang in summer

The Berwang-Bichlbach holiday region, with its hundreds of kilometres of hiking and mountaineering trails and its rustic alpine and mountain huts, is also worth a visit in summer. In addition to hikers, the mountains here also attract mountain bikers with their adventurous single trails on their slopes. And if you want to get even wilder, you can explore the skies by paragliding.

Directions

Your adventure day in the Berwang ski arena begins at the "Bichlbach Almkopfbahn" railway station.
