Cross-country skiing between Klais and Kaltenbrunn

One of the more challenging cross-country skiing trails in the Karwendel Alpine World begins just behind Klais railway station. The circular route to Kaltenbrunn alternates between open meadows, wooded sections, challenging climbs and exhilarating descents. The Wetterstein massif and the Zugspitze tower above the wintry landscape.

The trail is nicknamed ‘the athletic one’. To begin with, you’ll glide across the snow at a relatively leisurely pace. Further along, however, several ascents and descents demand stamina, a confident technique and controlled braking.

The circuit is therefore particularly suitable for cross-country skiers who already have some experience. Those still working on their technique can use the shorter section near Klais or book a cross-country skiing course in the region.

Cross-country skiing with views of the Wetterstein and Zugspitze

Between Klais and Kaltenbrunn, the trail winds through an open winter landscape. Along the way, views of the Wetterstein Mountains and the Zugspitze open up time and again. Especially across the open meadows, the bright mountain slopes on the horizon accompany you.

The circular route is groomed for both classic and skating styles. When there is sufficient snow, it can be linked via Gerold to other trails around Krün and Wallgau. This allows you to extend the tour depending on your fitness level and the conditions.

The shorter circular route in Kaltenbrunn

In Kaltenbrunn there is another circular trail approximately five kilometres long. This route is also groomed for both classic and skating styles. Biathletes regularly train here at the local facility.

Kaltenbrunn also serves as an alternative starting point for the trail to Klais. This means you can decide for yourself at which end of the loop you’d like to begin your tour.

Guest biathlon in Kaltenbrunn

At selected events, visitors can try their hand at combining endurance and concentration at the winter biathlon facility in Kaltenbrunn. After the physical exertion, the aim is to steady your breathing and hit the targets at the shooting range.

The guest biathlon takes place exclusively on announced dates and under expert supervision. The shooting range is not freely accessible to visitors. Advance registration at the Tourist Information Centre is required.

Equipment and current trail conditions

For the circuit, you’ll need cross-country skis for the classic technique or skating skis, suitable boots and poles. Breathable winter clothing, gloves and sunglasses are also part of the kit. If you do not have your own equipment, you can enquire in advance at the region’s hire centres about suitable gear.

Whether the trail can be groomed depends on the natural snow conditions. You should therefore check the latest trail report before you travel. Even when the trail is open, its condition and difficulty can change due to fresh snow, icy patches or fluctuating temperatures.

Always ski within sight of the person in front, keep your distance and stay at the side of the trail when taking a break. On downhill sections, you should adjust your speed to suit your ability and the current conditions.

Refreshments in Klais or Kaltenbrunn

After your cross-country ski tour, you’ll find places to stop for refreshments in Klais and Kaltenbrunn. As opening times may vary depending on the season, you should check in advance which restaurants are open on the day of your trip.

Travelling by train to the cross-country ski trail in Klais

Take the train to Klais station. The entrance to the cross-country ski trail is located directly behind the station. This means you can start your cross-country ski tour straight away upon arrival.

If you’d like to start in Kaltenbrunn or take part in a guest biathlon, you can reach the village via bus route 328, amongst other options. Check the current timetable and the meeting point specified in the event description in advance.

Check your train connection, the current trail conditions and, if necessary, any changes to the guest biathlon schedule immediately before your journey.
