E-bike tour to traditional breweries around Pfaffenhofen

Start
Pfaffenhofen a.d.Ilm
Duration
6 h
Distance
54 km
Key facts of the tour
This tour is something for beer lovers and landscape enthusiasts. Three breweries are visited, in between the ride goes along streams, through shady forests, gentle hilly landscapes and between - how could it be otherwise - hop fields.

With 53 kilometres and some differences in altitude, the circular tour is ideally suited for an e-bike, but can also be ridden well on a trekking or sports bike if you have a bit of fitness.

The paths are very well developed, and if you cycle alongside the road, then also on separate cycle paths.

Guided tours are offered at the Scheyer monastery brewery for groups of 10 or more. It is worth making an enquiry in advance if you are interested, even if you are travelling alone, perhaps you can join a group that has already registered: Telephone: 08441 7520.
A cycling tour for culture lovers and connoisseurs.

Arrive relaxed and use rental bikes from the local rental companies. The capacity for taking bicycles on trains is limited and taking your own bike on the train cannot be guaranteed, depending on the capacity.

You will now pass the Bürgerpark, which was laid out in 2017 for the small garden show "Nature in the City". You will pass the "Pfänder-" or "Hungerturm" (hunger tower), which was built around 1400 and where many a poor debtor, sometimes simply a sly and gambler, served their term of imprisonment. You cycle across Pfaffenhofen's main square, thus getting an impression of the old town centre of Paffenhofen. The main square is dominated by the town hall in the east and the parish church in the west. Both were built in the neo-Renaissance style in the 19th century.

After crossing the Gerolsbach, you cycle through the parks along the banks. At Mitterscheyern, the path turns south and leads you into Scheyern.

Scheyern Monastery, Monastery Brewery and Monastery Tavern

Almost 950 years ago, Scheyern Monastery was first founded in Bayrischzell and moved to Scheyern in 1119. The Wittelsbach dynasty had already settled here in 508.

The monastery is run by Benedictine monks. The educational and pastoral work as well as the maintenance of the monastery facilities need financial support. The monastery therefore runs several businesses. Central to this is sustainable management in small, regional cycles.

The monastery butchery, the brewery, the monastery tavern as well as the agricultural areas are oriented towards this principle. For example, the hops for the brewery are harvested in the surrounding area, partly even on the monastery's own land. The beer specialities brewed here are sold in the Klosterschenke, but also in other regional inns.

Guided tours of the brewery are available by appointment. There is a minimum group size of 10 people. A guided tour lasts 60 minutes and costs 4 euros per person. Visitors can register by calling 08441- 752230 or by e-mail.

In addition to the brewery tavern and restaurant, the Klosterschenke also has a hearty beer garden. From April to October, guests can sit here in the shade of old trees and enjoy the brewery's specialities. This can be accompanied by either homemade delicacies or, as is customary in Bavaria, snacks brought along. The beer garden is considered one of the most beautiful beer gardens in Upper Bavaria.

Your next stage covers about 25 kilometres and first takes you along the Schnatterbach. The landscape is slightly hilly, before Gerolsbach it is well downhill. In Strobenried you pass the church of St. Leonard, which was built in 1495. Now it is another 10 kilometres to the Metzgerbräu in Hohenwart. Shortly before Hohenwart, Englmannsberg Castle with the castle chapel is on the left. It dates back to the 15th century, but over time it was extended with farm buildings and structurally changed.

Metzgerbräu Hohenwart

The Gasthof Metzgerbräu has been family-owned for four generations and is writing brewing history here in the village.
What once began as a hobby soon led to the professional art of brewing. Whether seasonal bock beer, various summer beers or pale beers such as Zwickl and Paartalperle - the brewing specialities from Hohenwart are refreshing, drinkable and popular. The beers are served in the inn. If you want to take some beer home with you, you can have it bottled in 1-litre bottles.

Beer tastings, brewing courses and menu evenings are organised on request.

Your way back leads through the villages of Seibersdorf and Menzenbach. You will pass the 532 metre high Wolfsberg with the Pfaffenhofen broadcasting tower. Back in Pfaffenhofen, you will find the last brewery inn for today, a traditional one at the same time, on the main square.

Brauereigasthof Müllerbräu Pfaffenhofen

Beer was brewed on the main square in Pfaffenhofen as early as 1630. And the progenitor of the Müller brewing dynasty is mentioned in old documents as early as 1776.

Müllerbräu Pfaffenhofen obtains almost all of its energy as well as its heating and cooling requirements from renewable sources and is thus at the forefront worldwide.
From 2024, the new brewery will be added to the tourist highlights, where guests will then be able to directly experience the brewing process and enjoy gastronomy at the same time. However, this is still a vision of the future behind the noise of the construction site in Kellerstraße in Pfaffenhofen.

The Müllerbräu inn on the main square offers a wide range of Müllerbräu speciality beers - light, wheat or dark, non-alcoholic or bock. The pub serves delicious snacks for small appetites and homemade dishes for larger appetites.
