Cathedral treasures and bathing pleasures - from Freising to Stoibermühle

Pack your swimwear and let's head for the local recreation area! This bike tour for the whole family leads through the Isarauen to a secluded lake with a shallow shore, perfect for children.

Key facts of the tour
Once a quarry pit, today a bathing paradise: In summer, the "Stoibermühle" recreation area just outside Freising is the ideal destination for families. A secluded lake with a shallow shore, lots of greenery around it, and next door a beer garden with regional delicacies beckons. It's hard to believe that 30 years ago excavators were digging and making noise there. Back then, gravel was dug for the A 92 motorway, and the pit was then turned into a recreation area. Today, nothing can be seen of the excavators, and the slight roar of the nearby motorway can hardly be heard while happily splashing around.

The best way to discover the lake is on a bicycle tour from Freising. The highlight for families: the paths of the 15-kilometre round tour are very safe and child-friendly, and there are many exciting corners to discover. For example, you pass the Isar meadows where you can refresh your feet. In the "Luitpoldanlage", a playground with a large slide tower beckons. And finally, there is one of the most imposing churches in Bavaria - the Freising Cathedral - to discover, which also amazes children.
A cycling tour for families, culture lovers and nature lovers.

Arrive relaxed and use rental bikes from the local rental companies. The capacity for taking bicycles on trains is limited and taking your own bike on the train cannot be guaranteed, depending on the capacity.

St. Mary's Cathedral Freising

It is considered a masterpiece of sacred architecture: St. Mary's Cathedral. As the landmark of Freising, it sits loftily on the summit of the Domberg. Its two church towers, visible from afar, are characteristic. As early as 700, there is evidence of a St. Mary's church on the Domberg, which was elevated to the status of an Episcopal church shortly afterwards.

The present building dates from the late 12th century. Above all, its Romanesque portal and the large hall crypt with the famous Bestien column are impressive testimonies to this era. In the Baroque period, the cathedral underwent numerous changes in which famous artists were involved. Peter Paul Rubens, for example, created the mighty high altarpiece, which is now housed in Munich. In 1723/24, the brothers Cosmas Damian and Egid Quirin Asam decorated the cathedral with magnificent stucco and frescoes for the thousandth anniversary of the diocese. In 1821, the bishop's seat was moved from Freising to Munich. Today, Freising Cathedral is the concathedral of the Archdiocese of Munich and Freising. The cathedral church is not a free-standing building in itself. To the east is the Gothic, later Baroqueised cloister, which in turn is adjoined by the Benedictus Church. Above the south wing of the cloister is the baroque hall of the cathedral library. On the north side of the cathedral courtyard, the Gothic St. John's Church invites visitors.

Visitors can gain a variety of insights into the history of the cathedral during the guided tours of the Cathedral Church Foundation. For classical music lovers, the annual organ concerts are among the cultural highlights.

Direction

Go back along Bahnhofstraße, turn left and stay straight on until you have crossed the Wörtermoosach and Moosach rivers. Now keep left and stay on Fürstendamm until you reach the railway subway on the right. Follow Parkstraße and then turn right onto Erdinger Straße to cross the Schleifenmosach and the Isar. On the other side of the Korbinian Bridge, you can take a detour to the Isar beach.

Back on Erdinger Straße, cycle to the church of St. Lantpert and then turn left into Moosstraße. Then go through the subway under the B11 and follow the road to Riegerau at the fork. Go up between fields to the motorway bridge. At the end of the bridge, turn right and just before the bridge over the small stream, turn left into the car park for the bathing lake. Pass the water guard house and the toilet block and continue along the shore until a gravel path branches off to the left. Follow the path to the south shore of the lake past the bird sanctuary.

The north and east shores are best for children to swim. The water on the west shore is steeper and bathing is not allowed on the south shore.

Stoibermühle local recreation area

The Stoibermühle recreation area is located in the eastern part of Freising. Gravel was extracted here for the construction of the A92 motorway and the Freising recreation area Badesee Stoibermühle was designated after construction was completed. The almost 20-hectare area has been open since 1994. The lake invites visitors to swim, sunbathe and barbecue or go for a walk. On the southern shore there is a plant protection belt, otherwise there is access to the water all around. Sunbathing lawns have been laid out for the sun-seekers. The shore of the lake slopes pleasantly shallowly down to the water and therefore offers ideal conditions for children to splash around. Next door, the "Stoibermühle" beer garden offers Bavarian and Asian dishes in the summer months.

Beach parties are sometimes held at weekends.

Direction

For the way back, circle the lake to the western shore. From there, turn right and immediately left again and cross the A92 motorway in the direction of Marzlinger Weiher. Pass the pond and continue straight ahead across the Isar.

After the bridge over the Isar, turn left and ride along the riverbank for a while, where you can splash around on a secluded stretch of beach. In front of the basketball court of the "Luitpoldanlage" green area, you cycle to the right and come directly to a spacious playground that offers plenty of variety for the youngsters.

Playground in the Luitpoldanlage

On the playground, a large slide tower with a tube slide and a huge climbing element are waiting to be conquered. An adjacent football pitch, a skate park and a BMX trail invite the older children to let off steam. The playground is nicely shaded and quietly located between Moosach, Luitpoldanlage and allotment gardens. There is plenty of space for a family picnic under the trees.
