Key facts of the tour
The Main is also known as the "Franconian lifeline", as the river crosses the region with its wide bends from east to west for 354 kilometres. Fields, forests and small towns with medieval charm line its banks. Water hikers can actively enjoy the nature and landscape. A canoe trip is probably at its most beautiful in spring - nature awakens and breathes new life with its fresh greenery. Autumn also has its charms, when the forests in the Main valley change colour.

The most convenient starting point for all active travellers who want to get there by train is Lichtenfels. There is a railway station, boat hire and plenty of idyllic scenery on the Main. On the section between Lichtenfels and Hallstadt near Bamberg, canoeists have the still narrow river all to themselves and can follow the gentle bends. In addition, there is only one disturbing weir between Lichtenfels and Bamberg over 35 kilometres near the village of Hausen, where the boat has to be transferred around 30 metres. Otherwise, there are many renaturalised areas where the river can be a river again. So - get off the train and get paddling!

From the railway station it is just under a kilometre to the boat launching point under the Mainbrücke Coburger Straße. Walk along Zweigstraße to Badgasse. You will come to Coburger Straße, which you follow northwards under the railway tracks to the meadows by the river. The kayaks from the canoe hire company will be waiting for you here if the water level is high enough to allow paddling on the Main and if you have booked a boat in good time.

Recreational paddlers and families should bear in mind that they paddle around 4 to 5 kilometres per hour. For a day trip, plan a maximum of 20 kilometres, including breaks and short explorations. The boat hire shop also has tips for great tours depending on your mood and fitness level.
