Key facts of the tour
Wine has been cultivated in the region around Regensburg for 1800 years, brought here by the Romans. On this cycle tour along the Danube, you can enjoy views of water, fields, vineyards, mighty cliffs and time-honoured walls. The Prince's Garden with the Chinese Tower in Donaustauf bears witness to the princely lifestyle here. The Walhalla bears witness to aristocratic longings that manifested themselves in the beauty of the landscape.
However, you should be in good physical condition if you want to see the Temple of Honour of Ludwig I from the inside. It is possible to cycle up the hill thanks to the road leading up, but it is a challenge (around 60 metres with an 8% gradient). Otherwise, the view is highly impressive even as you cycle past.
You should also pack your swimming gear, as the Sarchinger Weiher pond is on the route.
Note on the tour:
The Chinese Tower is regularly open on every first Sunday from May to September, but there are special opening times that can be enquired about at the Donaustauf tourist information centre. Or you can make an appointment by telephone at least three days before your excursion. (Tel.: 09403 9552929)
Although the BaierWeinMuseum is also only open on Sundays, a visit to the outdoor facilities is always worthwhile.
